In August 2021, the narrow sales volume of China’s pickup truck market was 28244, a decrease of 10.6% over the same period last year. The cumulative sales volume from January to August was 267299, a year-on-year increase of 8.4%. Among them, 6293 automatic pickup trucks were sold in August, accounting for 22.28% of the total sales. The cumulative sales of automatic pickup trucks from January to August were 62694, accounting for 23.45% of the total sales. The sales volume of automatic pickup truck in August decreased compared with that in July. The root cause of this situation is the shortage of chips, resulting in the insufficient supply of automatic transmission and other parts.
It can be seen from the specific analysis that at present, diesel pickup truck is still the first choice for consumers to buy cars in China. Even if the combination of gasoline + automatic transmission can better represent the direction of passenger cars, it is still difficult to reverse the consumption concept. In August this year, the sales volume of diesel automatic pickup truck was 5460, while the sales volume of gasoline automatic pickup truck was only 833, accounting for 13.24% of the total sales volume of automatic pickup truck in August. From January to August, the cumulative sales of automatic pickup trucks were 62694, of which 81.98% came from diesel automatic pickup trucks, and the proportion of gasoline automatic pickup trucks was only 18.02%. Most of the sales of gasoline automatic pickup trucks came from the Great Wall poer, with a contribution rate of more than 70%.
In terms of specific sales, the sales of automatic pickup trucks in the current market mainly come from Great Wall, Jiangling, Jiangxi Isuzu, SAIC Maxus and Zhengzhou Nissan. The sales of automatic pickup models of the five manufacturers account for more than 99%. Among them, the Great Wall pickup truck is not only the leader of the pickup truck industry, but also the sales person of the automatic pickup truck category. In August, the sales volume of automatic pickup truck reached 2888, with a market share of 45.89%. From January to August, the cumulative sales volume of automatic pickup truck was 35851, with a market share of 57.18%. The dominant position of one company is very obvious.
Great Wall pickup currently has a wide selection of automatic models, including commercial pickup, passenger pickup, off-road pickup, black bullet, brigade mounted poer, fire bullet and many other models of Great Wall poer. The new 3.0T + 9at power system will also be officially installed. At present, the only problem restricting the further development of Great Wall pickup truck automatic transmission models is the insufficient supply caused by the lack of chips. I believe that with the gradual alleviation of chip supply and the further release of market demand, Great Wall pickup truck will further develop in the automatic pickup truck segment.
JMC’s automatic transmission sales mainly come from its Yuhu 7 and Yuhu 9 products. Yuhu 7 automatic transmission models are mainly diesel models. From January to August, a total of 5087 new cars were sold, with a market share of about 8%. Yuhu 9 is relatively balanced, and there is little gap in the sales of gasoline and diesel models. In recent years, while upgrading its products, JMC has adjusted its pickup product line accordingly, reducing the previous five models of Baodian, Yuhu 3, Yuhu 5, Yuhu 7 and Yuhu 9 to three models of xinbaodian, Yuhu 7 and Yuhu 9. However, the progress in automatic transmission models is not obvious. Although both of its products have automatic transmission options, However, due to problems such as cost performance and model positioning, consumers’ willingness to choose Jiangling automatic gear products is not strong.
SAIC Maxus has always been the brand with the highest automatic transmission shipment rate in the domestic pickup truck industry. The sales of automatic transmission pickup trucks account for about 86% of the total sales of the brand. T70 series products have become the most popular automatic transmission pickup truck model second only to the Great Wall poer. At present, diesel products are the best-selling automatic transmission models of SAIC Maxus. The sales volume of T70 diesel automatic transmission models from January to August was 6606, accounting for more than 90% of the sales volume of SAIC Maxus automatic transmission models. The sales volume of T90 diesel automatic transmission models from January to August is 238. At present, SAIC Maxus T90 only has diesel power option, and the gasoline automatic transmission model will be launched in the fourth quarter of this year. At that time, SAIC Maxus will have a more complete product pedigree.
Jiangxi Isuzu sold 823 automatic pickup trucks in August and 6224 automatic pickup trucks from January to August, still ranking first in the joint venture brand. Jiangxi Isuzu automatic pickup truck sales mainly come from lingtuo and d-max. from January to August, the sales volume of automatic pickup truck of lingtuo was 3250, while that of D-max was 2974, all of which are diesel automatic pickup trucks. Jiangxi Isuzu, as the representative of Isuzu diesel family in China’s commercial vehicle market, currently does not have gasoline automatic transmission option for its pickup products, which greatly restricts the development of Jiangxi Isuzu in the automatic transmission pickup market segment. In the future, Jiangxi Isuzu will complete the product lineup after the brand-new suzto gasoline 8at model is put on the market.
Zhengzhou Nissan, as the first brand to introduce automatic transmission models in China’s pickup industry, has a certain first mover advantage. With the increasingly fierce market competition, Zhengzhou Nissan has gradually popularized automatic transmission from high-end products to middle-end products. Ruiqi 6’s replacement of 2.3t + 9at has boosted the sales of Zhengzhou Nissan. The sales of automatic gear from January to August was 4167, and the sales of Navara, as the facade product of Zhengzhou Nissan brand, from January to August was 1410. At present, Zhengzhou Nissan has launched Ruiqi 6 flat bottom container model. As the only automatic flat bottom container pickup in the industry, it will improve the overall competitiveness. Navara also plans to launch two new cars, warrior version and Changtu version, to improve the sound volume. At the same time, although Futian, ZTE, Huanghai, BAIC motor and other brands have automatic transmission products, they have made no achievements in market sales. The main products are still medium and low-end manual transmission models. It is expected that more brands will rise in the automatic pickup truck market in the future.
